Quick answer
Top Trumps Quiz decks replace the classic stat-comparison mechanic with trivia questions. You still play in rounds, but instead of picking a category, you answer a question from the card. The deck is fully playable with classic Top Trumps if both players agree on a house rule.
What makes a Top Trumps Quiz deck different from a classic deck?
In a classic Top Trumps deck, each card has numeric stats (e.g., Speed, Power) and players take turns picking a stat to compare. The highest number wins the round. A Quiz deck replaces those stats with trivia questions. You read the question aloud, and the other player answers. A correct answer wins the card; a wrong answer loses it. The core turn-based structure stays the same, but the challenge shifts from number crunching to knowledge recall.
Quiz decks also tend to have fewer cards per pack (typically 30 instead of 30–36), and the questions are designed to be answered without prior expertise—each card includes the answer on the back or in a separate answer card. This makes them accessible for casual players and families.
Can you mix Quiz decks with classic Top Trumps decks?
Yes, but you need a house rule. The official Top Trumps line says Quiz decks are "fully playable" with classic decks, but the mechanics don't match up directly. A common workaround is to assign a numeric value to each question (e.g., 1 point for a correct answer, 0 for wrong) and treat that as the stat for that round. Alternatively, play separate rounds: one round with the Quiz deck, one with the classic deck. The winner is the player with the most cards at the end of the agreed number of rounds.
Top Trumps Quiz vs Classic: FAQ
- Do Quiz decks have the same number of cards as classic decks?
- Most Quiz decks contain 30 cards, similar to classic packs. Some classic decks have 30, others 36. Check the product description for the exact count. Card count is comparable, but always verify before buying.
- Are Quiz decks harder to play with young children?
- Quiz decks rely on reading and general knowledge, so they suit ages 8 and up. Classic stat decks are simpler for younger kids because they only compare numbers. For families with mixed ages, a classic deck like Dogs (with kid-friendly stats) may be a better fit. Choose Quiz for older kids and adults; classic for younger children.
- Which style is better for a game night with mixed interests?
- If your group enjoys trivia and learning, a Quiz deck adds variety. If everyone prefers quick, number-based competition, stick with classic. You can also alternate rounds with both types—just set a house rule for scoring. Both work for game night; pick based on your group's mood.
